Minden's Behaviour Approach

At Minden, we believe coming to school should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for children and their parents. Through our Student Code of Conduct, we have purposely created a safe learning environment which is calm but also stimulating.

Our school’s behaviour approach follows the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) philosophy which focuses on explicitly teaching children appropriate behaviours for both in the classroom and in the playground. We use positive reinforcement as the basis of our approach with a range of rewards being used for individuals and whole classes. Achievements are acknowledged and celebrated during our fortnightly assembly and our end-of-term whole-school assembly.

Each week, all classes engage in learning about our school expectations “I am Responsible, I Am Respectful, I Am ready To Learn”. Lessons focus on discussing what this behaviour means – what it looks like, sounds like, feels like in a range of situations. Role Play is used extensively, particularly with younger children, to demonstrate appropriate and inappropriate responses to various social situations that they will encounter both at school and in other contexts.

A significant focus has been placed on developing children’s resilience and consequently, we have implemented the Bounce Back program. This is a year-long program involving all classes.

A range of support measures are utilised for children who experience difficulty interacting in socially acceptable ways with adults or other children. Consequences are implemented for children who engage in wilful and persistent misbehaviour.

Parents are an integral part of our approach as we work together to reinforce acceptable behaviour at home and at school. We believe early and regular contact is vital to maintaining positive relationships and resolving issues.
